Rankin County is a one of the county from Mississippi's 82 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The county has a population of 115327 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 140901, making it the fourth most populous county in Mississippi. It covers total area of 806.09 sq mi (2087.76 square kilometre), of which, 774.52 square miles (2006 square kilometre) of it is land and 31.57 square miles (81.77 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the eighth largest by size in Mississippi. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in Mississippi.

The population density was 148.9 people per square mile (57.49/kmē), it is the seventh most populated county in terms of population density. There were 45070 housing units at an average density of 58.2 per square mile (22.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.62 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 104.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 108.1 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 140901, The racial makeup of the county was 110151 White, 27882 Black or African American, 323 American Indian, 1356 Asian, 44 Native Hawaiian, and 1145 from two or more races.
