In July 2008, its estimated population was 141186, It is 19th most populous county in North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 789.93 miē (2045.91 kmē), of which, 787.36 square miles (2039.25 kmē) of it is land and 2.57 square miles (6.66 kmē) of it is water, making it North Carolina's 15th largest county by total area.

Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 141186, The racial makeup of the county was 91.73% White, 5.9% Black or African American, 0.54% American Indian, 0.84% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.95% from two or more races.
