According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 789.93 miē (2045.91 kmē), of which, 787.36 square miles (2039.25 kmē) of it is land and 2.57 square miles (6.66 kmē) of it is water, making it North Carolina's 15th largest county by total area.
