It covers total area of 453.23 sq mi (1173.86 square kilometre), of which, 452.83 square miles (1172.82 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.39 square miles (1.01 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 20th largest by area in the U.S. state of Indiana.

The population density was 60.5 people per square mile (23.36/kmē), making it the 27th least densely populated county in Indiana. There were 11775 housing units at an average density of 26 per square mile (10.04/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 persons, and the average family size was 2.95 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 25801, The racial makeup of the county was 98% White, 0.53% Black or African American, 0.24% American Indian, 0.29% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.9% from two or more races.
