As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 33893 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 32641, It is the 48th largest in terms of population. The county encompasses an area of 597.26 sq mi (1546.9 kmē ), of which, 578.42 square miles (1498.1 kmē) of it is land and 18.84 square miles (48.8 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 38th largest by total area in Illinois.
