Raleigh County is one of the 55 county of West Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 79220 as per the Census data. Its population was estimated at 79357 in July 2008, It is the sixth largest in terms of population. Its area is just over 609.34 miē (1578.18 kmē), of which, 606.93 square miles (1571.94 kmē) of it is land and 2.41 square miles (6.24 kmē) of it is water, it is the tenth largest by area in the U.S. state of West Virginia.

The population density was 130.5 people per square mile (50.39/kmē), it is 14th most densely populated county in West Virginia. In the county Age distribution was 21.5% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 103.3 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 105.3 females. Its population was estimated at 79357 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 71345 White, 6526 Black or African American, 156 American Indian, 614 Asian, 14 Native Hawaiian, and 702 from two or more races.
