Putnam County is a one of the county from Tennessee's 95 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 62315 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 71160, It is the 18th largest in terms of population. The county encompasses an area of 402.56 sq mi (1042.63 sq km ), of which, 401.05 square miles (1038.71 sq km) of it is land and 1.5 square miles (3.88 sq km) of it is water, making it Tennessee's 59th largest county by total area.

The population density was 155.4 people per square mile (60/kmē), making its Tennessee's 20th most densely populated county. There were 26916 housing units at an average density of 67.1 per square mile (25.91/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.4 persons, and the average family size was 2.92 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 22.3% under the age of 18, 14.7% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 71160, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 67919 White, 1481 Black or African American, 192 American Indian, 822 Asian, 58 Native Hawaiian, and 688 from two or more races.
