Putnam County, New York is a county located in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 95745 as per the Census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 99244, It is New York's 29th most populous county. The county comprises an area of 246.25 mi˛ (637.78 square kilometre), of which, 231.28 square miles (599.01 square kilometre) of it is land and 14.97 square miles (38.77 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the eighth smallest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 414 people per square mile (159.85/km˛), it is the 17th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 35030 housing units at an average density of 151.5 per square mile (58.49/km˛). The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.27. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 99244, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 93.55% White, 3.09% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 2.05% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 1.08% from two or more races.
