As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 4862, It is the sixth least populous county in the U.S. state of Missouri. The county spans an area of 519.66 mi˛ (1345.91 square kilometre), of which, 517.9 square miles (1341.35 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.76 square miles (4.56 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 77th largest in terms of geographical size.

There were 2914 housing units at an average density of 5.6 per square mile (2.16/km˛). The average household size was 2.32 people, and the average family size was 2.83 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 4862, The racial makeup of the county was 99.1% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.12% American Indian, 0.14% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.58% from two or more races.
