Putnam County is a county located in the United States of Indiana. Putnam County had an official population of 36019 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 37183, It is the 41st largest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 482.58 sq mi (1249.88 sq km), of which, 480.31 square miles (1244 sq km) of it is land and 2.27 square miles (5.88 sq km) of it is water, it is the 16th largest by area in the U.S. state of Indiana.

For every 100 females there were 108.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.9 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 37183, The racial makeup of the county was 94.4% White, 3.49% Black or African American, 0.38% American Indian, 0.77% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.92% from two or more races.
