Putnam County is a one of the county from Illinois's 102 counties, located in Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. Putnam County had an official population of 6086 in 2000. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 6003, It is the sixth least populous county in the U.S. state of Illinois. The county encompasses an area of 172.24 sq mi (446.1 sq km ), of which, 159.8 square miles (413.88 sq km) of it is land and 12.45 square miles (32.25 sq km) of it is water, giving it the smallest by total area among Illinois's county.

The population density was 38.1 people per square mile (14.71/kmē), making its Illinois's 65th most densely populated county. There were 2888 housing units at an average density of 18.1 per square mile (6.99/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. The population's age distribution was 25.1% under the age of 18, 7% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males. Its population was estimated at 6003 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 5883 White, 41 Black or African American, 24 American Indian, 21 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 34 from two or more races.
