Putnam County is a county located in Florida, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 70423 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 73459, making it the 37th most populous county in Florida. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 827.16 mi˛ (2142.33 sq km), of which, 721.89 square miles (1869.69 sq km) of it is land and 105.27 square miles (272.65 sq km) of it is water, it is the 35th largest by area in the U.S. state of Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 70423 people in the county, organized into 27839 households, and 19464 families residing in the county. The population density was 97.6 people per square mile (37.68/km˛), it is 36th most densely populated county in Florida. There were 33870 housing units at an average density of 46.9 per square mile (18.11/km˛). The average household size was 2.48 people, and the average family size was 2.95 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 73459, The racial makeup of the county was 81.05% White, 16.79% Black or African American, 0.53% American Indian, 0.53% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 1.02% from two or more races.
