Providence County is a county located in Rhode Island, in the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 621602 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 626150, giving it the largest population among Rhode Island's county. Its area is just over 435.82 sq mi (1128.77 sq km), of which, 413.27 square miles (1070.36 sq km) of it is land and 22.56 square miles (58.43 sq km) of it is water, it is the second largest by area in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Rhode Island.

As of the census of 2000, there were 621602 people, 239936 households, and 152823 families residing in the county. The population density was 1504.1 people per square mile (580.74/kmē), making it the second most densely populated county in Rhode Island. There were 253214 housing units at an average density of 612.7 per square mile (236.56/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.11. In the county the population was spread out, with 24% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 108.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 113.8 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 626150, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 84.43% White, 9.44% Black or African American, 0.7% American Indian, 3.43% Asian, 0.18% Native Hawaiian, and 1.82% from two or more races.
