Providence City is a city located in Providence County, Rhode Island, in the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. In 2000, city's population was 173618 inhabitants. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 171557, making it Rhode Island's largest. The city comprises an area of 20.53 square miles (53.17 kmē), of which, 18.47 square miles (47.84 kmē) of it is land and 2.06 square miles (5.34 kmē) of it is water, it is the fourth largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in Rhode Island.

As of the census of 2000, there were 173618 residents, 62389 households, and 35859 families in the city. The population density was 9401.7 people per square mile (3630.02/kmē), making its Rhode Island's second most densely populated city. There were 67915 housing units at an average density of 3677 per square mile (1419.7/kmē). The average household size was 2.56 people, and the average family size was 3.33 people. In the city the population was spread out, with 26.1% under the age of 18, 18.9% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 15.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 109.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 114.3 females. The median age is 28.1 years, the median age of male residents at 27 and the median age of female residents at 29.1. The racial makeup of the city was 94666 White, 25243 Black or African American, 1975 American Indian, 10432 Asian, 270 Native Hawaiian, 10555 from two or more races and 30477 Ohter races.
