The county comprises an area of 507.14 square miles (1313.49 square kilometre), of which, 495.52 square miles (1283.39 square kilometre) of it is land and 11.63 square miles (30.12 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Maryland's 13th largest county by total area.

In the county the population was spread out, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 33% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 109.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 114.7 females. Its population was estimated at 820852 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 230701 White, 538142 Black or African American, 3662 American Indian, 32668 Asian, 975 Native Hawaiian, and 14704 from two or more races.
