Preston County is one of the 55 county of West Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 29334 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 30285, It is the 18th largest county by population in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The county encompasses an area of 651.39 mi˛ (1687.09 square kilometre ), of which, 648.32 square miles (1679.14 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.06 square miles (7.93 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the eighth largest by area in the U.S. state of West Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 29334 people, 11544 households, and 8353 families living in the county. The population density was 45.2 people per square mile (17.45/km˛), giving it the 33rd most densely populated county among the West Virginia. There were 13444 housing units at an average density of 20.7 per square mile (7.99/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.5 persons, and the average family size was 2.94 persons. In the county Age distribution was 23.7% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.9 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 30285, The racial makeup of the county was 98.66% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 0.13% American Indian, 0.19% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.58% from two or more races.
