Prentiss County, Mississippi is a county of the United States of Mississippi. It is home to over 25556 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 25707, It is the 39th most populous county in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It has total area of 418.24 miē (1083.24 kmē), of which, 414.93 square miles (1074.66 kmē) of it is land and 3.32 square miles (8.6 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 12th smallest by total area in Mississippi.


As of the census of 2000, there were 25556 people, 9821 households, and 7166 families residing in the county. The population density was 61.6 people per square mile (23.78/kmē), it is the 22nd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Mississippi. There were 10681 housing units at an average density of 25.7 per square mile (9.92/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25% under the age of 18, 11.6% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 25707, The racial makeup of the county was 21789 White, 3609 Black or African American, 54 American Indian, 49 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 206 from two or more races.
