Prairie County is a United States county located in the United States of Arkansas. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 9539 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 8580, It is the eighth least populous county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. It covers total area of 675.76 square miles (1750.21 kmē), of which, 645.93 square miles (1672.95 kmē) of it is land and 29.83 square miles (77.26 kmē) of it is water, it is the 34th largest by area in the U.S. state of Arkansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9539 people in the county, organized into 3894 households, and 2794 families living in the county. The population density was 14.8 people per square mile (5.71/kmē), making it the eighth least densely populated county in Arkansas. There were 4790 housing units at an average density of 7.4 per square mile (2.86/kmē). The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.88. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 103.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 107 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 8580, The racial makeup of the county was 84.17% White, 14.41% Black or African American, 0.41% American Indian, 0.17% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.84% from two or more races.
