Powhatan County, Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 22377 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 28006, It is the 61st largest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county extends throughout a territory of 262.4 mi˛ (679.61 square kilometre ), of which, 261.28 square miles (676.71 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.12 square miles (2.9 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 82nd largest in terms of geographical size.

It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 28006, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 23502 White, 4173 Black or African American, 55 American Indian, 77 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 193 from two or more races.
