Powhatan County, Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 22377 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 28006, It is the 61st largest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county extends throughout a territory of 262.4 mi˛ (679.61 square kilometre ), of which, 261.28 square miles (676.71 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.12 square miles (2.9 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 82nd largest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 85.6 people per square mile (33.05/km˛), it would be the 71st most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 7509 housing units at an average density of 28.7 per square mile (11.08/km˛). The average household size was 2.74 persons, and the average family size was 3.03 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 24% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 34.7% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 122.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 126.7 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 28006, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 23502 White, 4173 Black or African American, 55 American Indian, 77 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 193 from two or more races.
