Poweshiek County is a United States county located in the United States of Iowa. Poweshiek County had an official population of 18815 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 18590, making it the 37th most populous county in Iowa. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 586.17 mi˛ (1518.17 square kilometre), of which, 585.03 square miles (1515.22 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.14 square miles (2.95 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 28th largest by total area in Iowa.

The population density was 32.2 people per square mile (12.43/km˛), making it the 38th most densely populated county in Iowa. There were 8556 housing units at an average density of 14.6 per square mile (5.64/km˛). The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.88. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 108.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 112.6 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 18590, The racial makeup of the county was 96.63% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 0.29% American Indian, 1.33% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.96% from two or more races.
