Powell County is a county located in the United States of Montana. Powell County had an official population of 7180 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 7041, giving it the 28th largest population among Montana's county. It is spread over 2332.68 sq mi (6041.61 square kilometre), of which, 2325.94 square miles (6024.16 square kilometre ) of it is land and 6.74 square miles (17.46 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 30th largest by total area in Montana.

The population density was 3.1 people per square mile (1.2/kmē), it is the 26th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 2930 housing units at an average density of 1.3 per square mile (0.5/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 143.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 151.4 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 7041, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 91.73% White, 0.61% Black or African American, 4.8% American Indian, 0.37% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 2.49% from two or more races.
