Powder River County is a county located in the United States of Montana. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 1858 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 1694, It is Montana's tenth least populous county. The county extends throughout a territory of 3297.94 sq mi (8541.63 sq km ), of which, 3297.18 square miles (8539.66 sq km) of it is land and 0.76 square miles (1.97 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 16th largest by total area among Montana's county.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 1858 people, 737 households, and 525 families living in the county. The population density was 0.6 people per square mile (0.23/kmē), giving it the fourth least densely populated county among the Montana. There were 1007 housing units at an average density of 0.3 per square mile (0.12/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 people, and the average family size was 2.99 people. The population's age distribution was 26.6% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 1694, The racial makeup of the county was 97.52% White, 0% Black or African American, 1.95% American Indian, 0.06% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.47% from two or more races.
