Potter County is a United States county located in the United States of South Dakota. Potter County had an official population of 2693 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 2123, It is the ninth smallest county by population in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county comprises an area of 898.43 square miles (2326.92 square kilometre), of which, 866.49 square miles (2244.2 square kilometre) of it is land and 31.94 square miles (82.72 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 34th largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 2693 people, 1145 households, and 767 families residing in the county. The population density was 3.1 people per square mile (1.2/kmē), making its South Dakota's 19th least densely populated county. There were 1760 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (0.77/kmē). The average household size was 2.29 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 23% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 22.3% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 25% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 2123, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 2065 White, 0 Black or African American, 31 American Indian, 7 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 20 from two or more races.
