Pottawatomie County is a one of the county from Kansas's 105 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 18209 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 19695, giving it the 28th largest population among Kansas's county. The county comprises an area of 862.07 mi˛ (2232.75 sq km), of which, 844.24 square miles (2186.57 sq km) of it is land and 17.83 square miles (46.18 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 41st largest by total area in Kansas. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Kansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18209 people, 6771 households, and 4931 families living in the county. The population density was 21.6 people per square mile (8.34/km˛), giving it the 35th most densely populated county among the Kansas. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 29.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 19695, The racial makeup of the county was 96.03% White, 1.23% Black or African American, 0.72% American Indian, 0.55% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.47% from two or more races.
