Poteau City is a city located in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 7939 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 8258, It is the 49th largest in terms of population. It covers total area of 31.67 mi˛ (82.02 square kilometre), of which, 28.64 square miles (74.18 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.02 square miles (7.82 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 23rd largest by area in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Oklahoma.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 7939 people, 3013 households, and 2042 families living in the city. The population density was 277.2 people per square mile (107.03/km˛), it is 222nd least densely populated city in Oklahoma. There were 3351 housing units at an average density of 117 per square mile (45.17/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.48 persons, and the average family size was 3.02 persons. In the Poteau City, 24.6% of the population was under the age of 18, 12.8% were 18 to 24, 26.4% were 25 to 44, 19.9% were 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males. The median age is 34.6 years, The median age of males was 31.7 years, for females the median age was 37 years. The racial makeup of the city was 82.14% White, 2.24% Black or African American, 10% American Indian, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, 3.83% from two or more races and 1.39% Other races.
