The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 26079, It is the 60th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Indiana. Its area is just over 419.45 sq mi (1086.37 sq km), of which, 408.5 square miles (1058.01 sq km) of it is land and 10.95 square miles (28.36 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 31st largest by total area among Indiana's county. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in Indiana.

According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 26079, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 25438 White, 318 Black or African American, 75 American Indian, 75 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 172 from two or more races.
