Portsmouth City, Rockingham County, New Hampshire is a city located in the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. In 2000, city's population was 20784 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 20443, It is the eighth most populous in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.79 sq mi (43.49 square kilometre), of which, 15.61 square miles (40.43 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.18 square miles (3.06 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 12th largest by area in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in New Hampshire.

As of the census of 2000, there were 20784 people in the city, organized into 9875 households, and 4862 families living in the city. The population density was 1331.3 people per square mile (514.02/kmē), making it the 15th most densely populated city in New Hampshire.
