Portland City is a city in the Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population of the city was 64249 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 62561, It is Maine's largest by population . The city spans an area of 52.57 mi˛ (136.16 square kilometre), of which, 21.21 square miles (54.93 square kilometre) of it is land and 31.36 square miles (81.22 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Maine's sixth largest by total area. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Maine.

As of the census of 2000, there were 64249 people in the city, organized into 29714 households, and 13547 families residing in the city. The population density was 3029.2 people per square mile (1169.58/km˛), it is the most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Maine.
