Portage County is one of the 72 county of Wisconsin, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 67182. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 68744, giving it the 23rd largest population among Wisconsin's county. Its area is just over 822.76 sq mi (2130.94 kmē), of which, 806.31 square miles (2088.33 kmē) of it is land and 16.45 square miles (42.61 kmē) of it is water, it is the 37th largest by area in the U.S. state of Wisconsin.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 67182 people, 25040 households, and 16496 families residing in the county. The population density was 83.3 people per square mile (32.16/kmē), making its Wisconsin's 23rd most densely populated county. There were 26589 housing units at an average density of 33 per square mile (12.74/kmē). The average household size was 2.54 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.1% under the age of 18, 16.2% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 100.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 103.3 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 68744, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 65823 White, 325 Black or African American, 310 American Indian, 1644 Asian, 33 Native Hawaiian, and 609 from two or more races.
