Portage City is a United States city located in the Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population of city in 2000 stood at 33496 as per the Census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 36976, making it Indiana's 22nd largest. It is spread over 27.43 square miles (71.04 kmē), of which, 25.46 square miles (65.94 kmē ) of it is land and 1.97 square miles (5.1 kmē) of it is water, it is the tenth largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in Indiana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 33496 people in the city, organized into 12746 households, and 9017 families residing in the city. The population density was 1315.8 people per square mile (508.03/kmē), it is the 372nd most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Indiana.
