Pope County is one of the 102 county of Illinois, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 4413 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 4079, It is the least populous county in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is spread over 374.64 mi˛ (970.31 square kilometre), of which, 370.86 square miles (960.52 square kilometre ) of it is land and 3.77 square miles (9.76 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 22nd smallest by total area among Illinois's county.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 4413 residents, 1769 households, and 1220 families in the county. The population density was 11.9 people per square mile (4.59/km˛), giving it the least densely populated county among the Illinois. There were 2351 housing units at an average density of 6.3 per square mile (2.43/km˛). The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.84. In the county the population was spread out, with 21.5% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 102.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 4079, The racial makeup of the county was 93.09% White, 4.24% Black or African American, 0.96% American Indian, 0.32% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 1.4% from two or more races.
