Pondera County is a United States county located in the United States of Montana. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 6424 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 5852 in July 2008, It is the 32nd most populous county in the U.S. state of Montana. It is spread over 1639.85 square miles (4247.19 kmē), of which, 1624.7 square miles (4207.95 kmē ) of it is land and 15.16 square miles (39.26 kmē) of it is water, it is the 12th smallest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 4 people per square mile (1.54/kmē), it is Montana's 20th most densely populated county. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 5852, The racial makeup of the county was 4740 White, 7 Black or African American, 999 American Indian, 7 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 96 from two or more races.
