Polk County is one of the 100 county of North Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. It is home to over 18324 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the estimated population was 19074, giving it the 17th smallest population among North Carolina's county. It is spread over 238.6 square miles (617.97 sq km), of which, 237.85 square miles (616.03 sq km ) of it is land and 0.75 square miles (1.94 sq km) of it is water, it is the fifth smallest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

The population density was 77 people per square mile (29.73/kmē), it is 63rd most densely populated county in North Carolina. The population's age distribution was 20.1% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 23.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 19074, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 93.28% White, 5.49% Black or African American, 0.24% American Indian, 0.25% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.7% from two or more races.
