Polk County is a county located in Nebraska, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 5639 as per the Census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 5122, It is the 54th most populous county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. It covers total area of 440.72 sq mi (1141.46 square kilometre), of which, 438.84 square miles (1136.59 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.88 square miles (4.87 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 11th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Nebraska.


As of the census of 2000, there were 5639 people in the county, organized into 2259 households, and 1569 families residing in the county. The population density was 12.8 people per square mile (4.94/kmē), making it the 40th most densely populated county in Nebraska. There were 2717 housing units at an average density of 6.2 per square mile (2.39/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 25.1% under the age of 18, 6% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males.
