Polk County is a one of the county from Florida's 67 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 483924 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 580594, making it the ninth most populous county in Florida. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2009.99 sq mi (5205.85 sq km), of which, 1874.38 square miles (4854.62 sq km) of it is land and 135.6 square miles (351.2 sq km) of it is water, makes it the fifth largest by total area in Florida.

The population density was 258.2 people per square mile (99.69/kmē), it would be the 19th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Florida. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 24.4% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.1 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 580594, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 477133 White, 83531 Black or African American, 2954 American Indian, 8985 Asian, 447 Native Hawaiian, and 7544 from two or more races.
