Pocahontas County, West Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 9131. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 8472, making it West Virginia's eighth smallest county. It has total area of 941.85 square miles (2439.38 square kilometre), of which, 940.29 square miles (2435.34 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.56 square miles (4.04 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the third largest by total area among West Virginia's county.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 9131 people, 3835 households, and 2526 families living in the county. The population density was 9.7 people per square mile (3.75/kmē), it would be the least densely populated county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. There were 7594 housing units at an average density of 8.1 per square mile (3.13/kmē). The average household size was 2.3 people, and the average family size was 2.83 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 20.9% under the age of 18, 7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 106.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 8472, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 8306 White, 89 Black or African American, 6 American Indian, 13 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 58 from two or more races.
