Pocahontas County is a county located in the United States of Iowa. In 2000, county's population was 8662 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 7560, It is the tenth smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Iowa. The county extends throughout a territory of 579.13 square miles (1499.94 sq km ), of which, 577.7 square miles (1496.24 sq km) of it is land and 1.42 square miles (3.68 sq km) of it is water, making it the 35th largest by size in Iowa.

The population density was 15 people per square mile (5.79/kmē), it is the seventh least populated county in terms of population density. There were 3988 housing units at an average density of 6.9 per square mile (2.66/kmē). The average household size was 2.35 people, and the average family size was 2.91 people. Age range in the county was well distributed with 25.4% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 7560, The racial makeup of the county was 7445 White, 22 Black or African American, 18 American Indian, 20 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 52 from two or more races.
