Pitt County is a United States county located in the United States of North Carolina. The population of county in 2000 stood at 133798 as per the Census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 156081, giving it the 16th largest population among North Carolina's county. The county spans an area of 654.77 square miles (1695.85 sq km), of which, 651.58 square miles (1687.58 sq km) of it is land and 3.19 square miles (8.26 sq km) of it is water, it is the 25th largest in terms of geographical size.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 23.6% under the age of 18, 17.5% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 156081, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 63.89% White, 33.54% Black or African American, 0.31% American Indian, 1.15% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.05% from two or more races.
