Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 156081, giving it the 16th largest population among North Carolina's county. The county spans an area of 654.77 square miles (1695.85 sq km), of which, 651.58 square miles (1687.58 sq km) of it is land and 3.19 square miles (8.26 sq km) of it is water, it is the 25th largest in terms of geographical size.
