Piscataquis County, Maine


Piscataquis County is a county in the United States of Maine. It is home to over 17235 people (2000 census). According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 16961, It is Maine's least populous county. It is spread over 4377.36 square miles (11337.31 sq km), of which, 3966.22 square miles (10272.46 sq km ) of it is land and 411.14 square miles (1064.85 sq km) of it is water, making it the second largest by size in Maine. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Maine.

As of the census of 2000, there were 17235 people, 7278 households, and 4858 families living in the county. The population density was 4.3 people per square mile (1.66/kmē), making its Maine's least densely populated county. There were 13783 housing units at an average density of 3.5 per square mile (1.35/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.34 persons, and the average family size was 2.83 persons. In the county Age distribution was 23.4% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 26% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 16961, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.92% White, 0.34% Black or African American, 0.58% American Indian, 0.29% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.85% from two or more races.
