Phoenix City is a city in the Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. In 2000, the population was 1321045. In July 2008, its estimated population was 1567924, making it Arizona's largest. Its area is just over 475.09 square miles (1230.48 square kilometre), of which, 474.86 square miles (1229.88 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.23 square miles (0.6 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the largest by total area in Arizona. It is ranks 11 in the size of its inland waterways in Arizona.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 1321045 people, 465834 households, and 307243 families residing in the city. The population density was 2781.9 people per square mile (1074.1/kmē), it is tenth most densely populated city in Arizona. There were 495832 housing units at an average density of 1044.2 per square mile (403.17/kmē). The average household size was 2.79 persons, and the average family size was 3.39 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 28.9% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who were 65 or older. The median age is 30.7 years, the median age of male residents at 30.1 and the median age of female residents at 31.5. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 71.07% White, 5.1% Black or African American, 2.02% American Indian, 2% Asian, 0.13% Native Hawaiian, 3.28% from two or more races and 16.4% Other races.
