The July 2008 population estimate is 4477, It is the 11th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Colorado. The county spans an area of 687.74 mi˛ (1781.24 square kilometre), of which, 687.62 square miles (1780.93 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Colorado's tenth smallest county by total area.
