Philippi City is a one of the Barbour County, West Virginia, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, city's population was 2870 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 2783, making it West Virginia's 54th largest. The city encompasses an area of 2.94 mi˛ (7.61 sq km ), of which, 2.84 square miles (7.36 sq km) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 sq km) of it is water, making it the 71st largest by size in West Virginia.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 2870 residents, 1119 households, and 668 families in the city. The population density was 1010.6 people per square mile (390.19/km˛), making its West Virginia's 150th most densely populated city. There were 1260 housing units at an average density of 443.7 per square mile (171.31/km˛). The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.92. Age range in the city was well distributed with 20.9% under the age of 18, 18% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 78.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.2 males. The median age was 34.3 years, The median age of males was 32.2 years, for females the median age was 36.4 years. The racial makeup of the city was 2720 White, 32 Black or African American, 30 American Indian, 25 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, 50 from two or more races and 12 Ohter races.
