Pettis County is a county located in Missouri, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 39403 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 41006, making it Missouri's 26th largest county. The county extends throughout a territory of 686.34 square miles (1777.61 kmē ), of which, 684.82 square miles (1773.68 kmē) of it is land and 1.52 square miles (3.94 kmē) of it is water, it is the 35th largest by area in the U.S. state of Missouri.

As of the census of 2000, there were 39403 people in the county, organized into 15568 households, and 10568 families residing in the county. The population density was 57.5 people per square mile (22.2/kmē), making its Missouri's 29th most densely populated county. There were 16963 housing units at an average density of 24.8 per square mile (9.58/kmē). The average household size was 2.49 people, and the average family size was 3.01 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 106 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 109.1 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 41006, The racial makeup of the county was 93.78% White, 3.09% Black or African American, 0.57% American Indian, 0.73% Asian, 0.09% Native Hawaiian, and 1.75% from two or more races.
