Petoskey City is a city located in Emmet County, Michigan, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 6080. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6028, It is Michigan's 168th largest by population . According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.23 square miles (13.55 kmē), of which, 5.02 square miles (13 kmē) of it is land and 0.21 square miles (0.54 kmē) of it is water, it is the 140th largest by area in the U.S. state of Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6080 residents, 2700 households, and 1448 families in the city. The population density was 1210.9 people per square mile (467.53/kmē), making it the 291st most densely populated city in Michigan. There were 3342 housing units at an average density of 665.7 per square mile (257.03/kmē). The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.89. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 23% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males. The median age is 38.7 years, the median age of male residents at 35.3 and the median age of female residents at 40.8. The racial makeup of the city was 5726 White, 20 Black or African American, 193 American Indian, 49 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, 79 from two or more races and 12 Ohter races.
