Petal City is one of the city of Forrest County, Mississippi, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 7579. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 10575, It is the 44th largest by population in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The city has a total area of 9.69 square miles (25.1 kmē), of which, 9.67 square miles (25.05 kmē) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 kmē) of it is water, making it Mississippi's 63rd largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7579 people in the city, organized into 2979 households, and 2079 families residing in the city. The population density was 783.8 people per square mile (302.63/kmē), it is 106th most densely populated city in Mississippi. There were 3208 housing units at an average density of 331.7 per square mile (128.07/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.52 persons, and the average family size was 3.05 persons.
