Petal City is one of the city of Forrest County, Mississippi, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 7579. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 10575, It is the 44th largest by population in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The city has a total area of 9.69 square miles (25.1 kmē), of which, 9.67 square miles (25.05 kmē) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 kmē) of it is water, making it Mississippi's 63rd largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7579 people in the city, organized into 2979 households, and 2079 families residing in the city. The population density was 783.8 people per square mile (302.63/kmē), it is 106th most densely populated city in Mississippi. There were 3208 housing units at an average density of 331.7 per square mile (128.07/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.52 persons, and the average family size was 3.05 persons. In the city the population is diverse age-wise, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.9 males. The median age of the city's population was 34.5 years, the median age of male residents at 32.3 and the median age of female residents at 36.2. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 93.93% White, 4.43% Black or African American, 0.29% American Indian, 0.08% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 0.74% from two or more races and 0.53% Other races.
