Perry County is a county located in Mississippi, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The county has a population of 12138 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 12235, It is the 17th smallest in terms of population. The county has a total area of 650.2 sq mi (1684.01 sq km), of which, 647.18 square miles (1676.19 sq km) of it is land and 3.02 square miles (7.82 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 29th largest by total area in Mississippi.

The population density was 18.8 people per square mile (7.26/kmē), making its Mississippi's 11th least densely populated county. There were 5107 housing units at an average density of 7.9 per square mile (3.05/kmē). The average household size was 2.72 persons, and the average family size was 3.18 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 28.7% under the age of 18, 10% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 12235, The racial makeup of the county was 76.23% White, 22.64% Black or African American, 0.39% American Indian, 0.1% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.6% from two or more races.
