Its population was estimated at 10317 in July 2008, It is 12th least populous county in Arkansas. The county comprises an area of 560.47 mi˛ (1451.61 sq km), of which, 550.94 square miles (1426.93 sq km) of it is land and 9.53 square miles (24.68 sq km) of it is water, making it Arkansas's third smallest county by total area.

For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 10317, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.08% White, 2.55% Black or African American, 0.99% American Indian, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.21% from two or more races.
