Penobscot County, Maine is a county of the United States of Maine. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 144919 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 148651, It is third most populous county in Maine. The county extends throughout a territory of 3556.14 sq mi (9210.36 square kilometre ), of which, 3395.73 square miles (8794.9 square kilometre) of it is land and 160.41 square miles (415.46 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the fourth largest by size in Maine. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Maine.

The population density was 42.7 people per square mile (16.49/kmē), it is Maine's ninth most densely populated county.
