According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the state is 12448279, It is the sixth largest by population in the U.S. state of America. The state spans an area of 46055.24 square miles (119282.52 square kilometre), of which, 44816.61 square miles (116074.49 square kilometre) of it is land and 1238.63 square miles (3208.04 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 33rd largest by area in the U.S. state of America.

The population's age distribution was 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males. The median age is 38 years, The median age of males and females living in Pennsylvania was 36.5 and 39.4 years respectively.
