Pennington County is one of the 66 county of South Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 88565 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 98533, It is the second most populous county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It covers total area of 2784.31 square miles (7211.33 sq km), of which, 2776.15 square miles (7190.2 sq km) of it is land and 8.16 square miles (21.13 sq km) of it is water, it is the third largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota.

The population density was 31.9 people per square mile (12.32/kmē), it is the eighth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 37249 housing units at an average density of 13.4 per square mile (5.17/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.49 persons, and the average family size was 3 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.6% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 98533, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 86.72% White, 1.47% Black or African American, 8.24% American Indian, 0.87% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian, and 2.64% from two or more races.
