Payette County is a United States county located in the United States of Idaho. The county has a population of 20578 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 22966, It is the 14th most populous county in the U.S. state of Idaho. The county comprises an area of 410.19 mi˛ (1062.39 sq km), of which, 407.52 square miles (1055.47 sq km) of it is land and 2.67 square miles (6.92 sq km) of it is water, makes it the smallest by total area in Idaho.

The population density was 50.5 people per square mile (19.5/km˛), giving it the sixth most densely populated county among the Idaho. There were 7949 housing units at an average density of 19.5 per square mile (7.53/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.78 persons, and the average family size was 3.21 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 30.6% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 22966, The racial makeup of the county was 96.12% White, 0.27% Black or African American, 0.96% American Indian, 1.02% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.59% from two or more races.
